When your furnace or heat pump acts up on a cold Central Texas night, the first question is usually “Can it be fixed?” The second one is harder: “Should it be?” If you’re in Killeen, Belton, Temple or Georgetown and you’re weighing a repair against a new system, here’s how to think it through, and what we look at when we help you decide.
Start with a real diagnosis
Don’t make the call based on a noise or a guess. A technician should find the actual problem first. Some heating issues that feel like the end of the road, like a failed igniter, a bad capacitor, a worn blower motor or a dirty flame sensor, are routine repairs. Others, like a cracked heat exchanger on a gas furnace or a failed compressor on a heat pump, are a much bigger decision.
Once you know what’s wrong, you can weigh the repair honestly.
Five questions that point toward repair or replacement
1. How old is the system?
Age isn’t everything, but it matters. If your system is 12+ years old, it’s worth getting a replacement option alongside the repair quote so you can compare. A newer system with one failed part is usually a good repair candidate.
2. Is this the first repair or the third?
One repair in several years is normal wear. If you’ve called for service on the same system several times recently, the money might be better spent on equipment you can count on.
3. Is it safe?
Some problems aren’t worth patching. A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide into your home, and that’s a replacement conversation, not a repair one. If your CO alarm ever goes off, get everyone outside and call 911.
4. Is your home comfortable when it does run?
Rooms that never warm up, a heat pump that leans on emergency heat all winter, or electric bills that keep climbing can all point to a system that’s struggling, even when it technically still works.
5. Does it still match your home?
If you’ve added on, finished a space or changed how you use your home, the system you have may not fit anymore. A new install is a chance to get the right size and setup, including options like a heat pump or a ductless mini-split for a room that’s always been hard to heat or cool.
Heat pump or furnace?
Plenty of Central Texas homes heat with a heat pump, and plenty use a gas furnace. Both work well here when they’re sized and installed right. Since a heat pump also handles your cooling, replacing an aging heat pump means upgrading summer comfort too. We install heat pumps, furnaces and ductless mini-split systems, and we’ll walk you through what makes sense for your home instead of pushing one answer.

FAQ (for FAQ block / schema)
How do I know if I should repair or replace my heater?
Start with a diagnosis. Then weigh the system’s age, how often it’s needed repairs, whether the problem is a safety issue, and how well it keeps your home comfortable. If your system is 12+ years old, ask for a replacement option alongside the repair quote.
Is a cracked heat exchanger worth repairing?
A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into your home. It’s usually a replacement conversation. Turn the furnace off and call for service.
